Subject: [mdbirding] Old Legislative Road directions

I thought it would be nice to have Scott Baron's directions here:

Directions to Old Legislative Rd.: Take exit 33 off I-68. Go south for over 2 miles. You'll reach a residential area and a four way intersection in the little village of Woodland. Cross the stream and sort of bear right on Old Legislative Rd., which is not signed there. This road takes one into a meadow on the left and some woods on the right. From there to the sharp right turn 1/2 mile ahead is Henslow's Sparrow and Golden-winged Warbler habitat.

I would like to add a bit to these really excellent directions, just because things always look different when you're new to a place. I had thought before I went that one could just bird from the road, but turns out one of the best spots requires walking into the meadow that is mentioned.

The four way intersection is after the stream and the roads come in at odd angles; I wasn't sure that was it, at first glance. I luckily didn't have to wonder because there were several cars visible ahead as soon as I did bear slightly right and keep going just a short way. Also, birders were coming and going on the track up into the meadow. (My favorite marker for a rare bird location--cars of other birders!) Park on the right in front of the large bar, but go into the meadow on the left. It climbs up to a little ridge, and there are several trails. I went straight up, and heard Henslows on the right. People were talking about golden wings being looked for along the ridge trails.

I'm sure others with more experience of the area can add to this, but it's a start. What a lovely place. Lots of butterflies as well as birds.
