Subject: [mdbirding] Anne Arundel: Black Tern, Grasshopper Sparrow, etc

Hello all.

I was highly surprised to find a Black Tern flying NNE up the Patapsco River this evening. It seemed to be heading in the general direction of Hart-Miller Island. The bird was an adult. With plenty of black showing, dark bill and general small appearance. I had been hoping for one this spring, but thus far had dipped. I was just discussing this species with Bill Hubick the other day, who reminded me how June can bring forth some random birds. Indeed!

I made a stop in south county today, as well. I found a lone Grasshopper Sparrow along the edge of the cut hay field across the street from General's Highway Corridor Park. First I noted it in flight, then got a good diagnostic look at it on the ground. This species no longer breeds in my local area, so this is quite likely the closest place to home I've foun one in quite some time. The field seems to be private property, so I just observed ithe area from the shoulder.

Other notable birds from the day were the semi-common north county seasonals: Little Blue Heron, Cattle Egret, Green Heron, etc.

Also of note: A Yellow-billed Cuckoo has been heard at Fort Smallwood two of the last three days.
