Barry and I took a couple of hours this morning to check out some of the field other nice birds in NE Frederick and NW Carroll Counties. We had luck with Dickcissels, Red-headed Woodpeckers, Grasshopper Sparrows and some others but could not find any Vesper Sparrows, either on Sharrett Road or on Baptist Rd where one had been seen in May (the best field on Baptist has been mowed.) We also made a short stop to look for the Bobolink reported on Keysville Rd. near Hagerstown Ln but again did not see r hear it, by then it was getting late and birds were slowing down.
Red-headed Woodpeckers: 1 along Sharrett Rd. east of the RR crossing; 1 on post next to pond NW of intersection of Tom's Creek Church Rd. and Simmons Rd. (both adults)
Dickcissel: 3 singing males along Sixes Rd. south of Tom's Creek; 3 along Sixes Bridge Rd. east of Keysville Rd.
Grasshopper Sparrow: 8 seen, along Sixes Rd; Sixes Bridge Rd and Sharrett Rd.
Savannah Sparrow: 1 along Sharrett Rd and 1 along Sixes Bridge Rd.
2-3 Meadowlarks were seen or heard (seemed in low numbers this year); several pairs of Killdeer; only two Field Sparrows seen/heard
We also drove Harney Rd from 140 to Baptist Rd. late in the morning but saw nothing of special interest.
