Subject: [MDBirding] Allegheny and Garrett County Birding

Decided to take a second trip of the season back to Garrett and Allegheny counties with my husbad Jim, to see if we could get some of the birds we missed. Skipped Old Legislative Rd., since we had the Henslow's and Golden Wings on our previous trip. Headed out to Finzel first thing in the early morning, and we were not dissappointed. FOY birds for both of us was a RUFFED GROUSE that we flushed up right past the gate. At least 2 ALDER FLYCATCHERS were vocalizing, and it was nice to compare them with the WILLOW FLYCATCHERS closeby. A VIRGINIA RAIL at the small wetland area, gave a distess call, then obligingly gave it's full song. Warblers included CHESTNUT SIDED, YELLOW, AMERICAN REDSTART and COMMON YELLOWTHROAT. Did not have the Northern Waterthrush and Hooded we had on our first trip, and unfortunately, did not hear or see the Purple Finch. Second stop was the High Rock Fire Tower Rd., where ufortunately, did not hear any Mourning Warblers - maybe too late in the season to sing? We did have HOODED, BLACK AND WHITE and CHESTNUT SIDED and 2 more RUFFED GROUSE. Lastly, Russell Rd. gave us one vocalizing VESPER SPARROW, as well as the more common GRASSHOPPER, BOBOLINKs (at least 2), and other common birds. A full report will be posted to E-bird. Now if I can only get that darned Mourning Warbler and Black billed Cuckoo for my year list!
