Subject: [MDBirding] Yellow-crowned Night Heron in Bladensburg

I spent some time at Bladensburg Waterfront Park late this afternoon. The highlight was an adult Yellow-crowned Night Heron. The bird flew overhead three times, allowing fairly good views of the structure of the bird and pattern of the face. It briefly settled out of sight in a stand of dead trees on the opposite side of the CSX railroad tracks from the park before flying to the south towards DC. Other birds present included Tree Swallows, Barn Swallows, Northern Rough-winged Swallows, Chimney Swifts, a pair of Eastern Kingbirds, 26 Killdeer, groups of Mallards and Canada Geese, one Wood Duck, and one Great Blue Heron. No Least Terns were present while I was there. Osprey and Belted Kingfishers flew up and down the river continuously.
