Last Friday, after work, I stopped by the Melford business complex (mostly private) in Bowie to check a few of the small ponds. In a rainwater ditch right next to Rt. 50, there was a family of Hooded Mergansers. I counted eight young birds (though old enough to be diving), but couldn't locate the mother before a thunderstorm cut my visit short.
I've seen a hen twice before in Prince George's in June, but this is the first time I've confirmed breeders.
