Subject: [MDBirding] 6/24 Quarry Lake, Pikesville

I arrived at Quarry Lake in Pikesville around 6:30pm on 6/24. My main interest was the Green Heron nest as well as the two Great Blue Heron nests. The Green Heron pair have now laid 4-5 eggs in the nest. Based on this and previous observations at the site I would estimate the eggs were laid between 7-10 days ago. The Great Blue Herons have two nests in the same tree. One has a growing chick (just one) that I first saw on 6/10 (though it was reported by others before that) while the other nest is nearly always being sat on as if the bird was sitting on eggs. I am relatively new to the ins and outs of birding but I am thinking at this point either a) the heron just really likes sitting in the nest or b) it is sitting on some dud eggs.

Here is the overview of what I saw:

2 Heron, Green
2 Crow, American
2 Kingbird, Eastern
10 Goldfinch
x Catbird, Gray
x Swallow, Barn
x Swallow, Tree
1 Oriole, Orchard
1 Bluebird, Eastern
1 Cowbird, Brown-Headed
3 Heron, Great Blue (2 adults, 1 chick)
x Dove, Mourning
4 Dove, Rock
1 Grebe, Pied-billed
1 Pewee, Eastern Wood
3 Merganser, Hooded (2 male, 1 female)
x Goose, Canada
1 Mockingbird, Northern
x Blackbird, Red-winged
x Swift, Chimney
x Robin, American
