Subject: [MDBirding] Guideline Reminders

Hi all,

As the group continues to grow, I thought I would send a reminder for all
new users to check out our best-posting guidelines available here
https://sites.google.com/site/mdbirdinghost/f/guidelines.pdf

and a list of frequently asked questions available here
https://sites.google.com/site/mdbirdinghost/f/FAQ.pdf

Also, copied below is the relevant text for some of the questions/issues
that are getting raised often. In summary, 1) try to remember to include
your full name/location at the end of your post, 2) Mention the county/city
for lesser known birding spots 3) When starting a new topic, compose a new
email as opposed to replying and changing the subject of an old one, 4)
Consider highlights/links for ebird reports.

And as a brief status update of almost 3 weeks in, we continue to add 3-10
people per day and are coming up on 450 members.

best,

Jared Fisher
Bethesda, MD

*Guidelines:*
1) Use a signature block with your full name and geographic location at the
end of your email such as

Jared Fisher
Bethesda, MD

Also consider changing your display name as outlined in this post
http://tinyurl.com/7thd5at

2) Keep in mind that group members are from all over Maryland & DC and
might not know the exact location of Keedysville or Glenora Park. For this
reason, when posting about your sightings, consider specifying the county
or a larger town/city nearby as well as your exact location. For
example: "This morning I visited Lake Needwood in Montgomery County......"

*FAQs*
4) Why does my post for a new topic show up as a reply to an old one?
Google Groups has a very sensitive stacking feature for replied posts. To
get a look at this visit the group on the web*. If you want to start a new
discussion topic from your email, its best to compose a completely new
message to <mdbirding...> . If you start a message by reply
all, regardless of whether you change the email subject, it will display
on the web as a reply.*

5) What is the best way to share an eBird checklist with the group?
The best way to share your eBird list is to simply copy and paste the eBird
report URL into your message. Here's a sample:
http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S10824451. As an alternative,
click "Email Yourself" from your eBird report. A copy will be e-mailed to
your email address. This report can then be pasted into your message to the
list. The former method is superior due to better formatting and support
for images. Either way, please introduce your eBird reports with a short
text summary of the outing and any noteworthy highlights. For example,
"The highlight of my morning walk at Morgan Run NEA in Carroll Co. was a
singing Mourning Warbler. Here's the full eBird report:"
