With no AC or power in my abode and record high temps in the DC area, seemed like a good weekend to join the ranks of MD birders who have ventured to western MD recently for an extended trip. (Given the number of posts, I may have been the only MD birder not to have gone there for an extended trip the past few months!)
The highlight was a " BREWSTER'S WARBLER" (GW X BW hybrid) towards the east end of Russell Road. First eBird record for Garrett Co. this year, and only the second in the last 9 years. Other birds of note on the road included BB CUCKOO (calling briefly towards east end of road), E. SCREECH OWL, VESPER SPARROW, a family of TURKEYS, uncommon in the county NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD, and the rest of the expected birds that others have reported from there. No sign of the Blue Grosbeak, however. Also had five E. WHIP-POOR-WILLS in the St. John's Rock area of eastern Garrett, my county KENTUCKY WARBLER in southern Garrett on Chestnut Grove Rd. (thanks to Kathy Calvert for reporting this to eBird), and COMMON NIGHTHAWK over Cumberland. Good birding elsewhere as well but nothing unexpected.
Good birding! Jim Moore (not Jim Green) Rockville, MD
