This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon Naturalist Society. This report was completed Tuesday, July 3, at noon.
Top birds this week are GREAT WHITE HERON* in MD and PURPLE GALLINULE in DE.
Other birds of interest include NORTHERN BOBWHITE, AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, MISSISSIPPI KITE, shorebirds, LEAST TERN, EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE*, LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, VEERY, sparrows including HENSLOW'S, DICKCISSEL, and BOBOLINK.
A GREAT WHITE HERON*, a color morph of the GREAT BLUE HERON, was found June 30 and seen again July 2 at Big Pool in Washington Co, MD.
A PURPLE GALLINULE was found July 1 at Grier's Pond, Dutch Neck Rd, Middletown, DE, and was still there on July 3.
NORTHERN BOBWHITES were heard calling June 26 behind West Ocean City Fitness in West OC, Worcester Co, MD.
WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS continued to be seen from the Ocean City Inlet, Worcester Co, MD with a report from June 29.
AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS* continued to be seen in DE last week with reports from Thousand Acre Marsh near Delaware City and from Fowler Beach, Sussex Co.
MISSISSIPPI KITES continue to be seen at the P. B. Smith Elementary School and the area near it in Warrenton, VA, with reports from June 26 & 27. Another one was seen June 28 at Viewpoint Circle in Montclair (Dumfries), Prince William Co, VA.
Among the several shorebirds at Bombay Hook NWR, DE on June 26 were 11 AMERICAN AVOCETS and four BLACK-NECKED STILTS at Raymond Pool. More than a 100 RED KNOTS were among the shorebirds at Fowler Beach, Sussex Co, DE on July 1.
LEAST TERNS continue to be observed at the Bladensburg Waterfront Park, Prince George's Co, MD with reports from June 29 and July 2. A SANDWICH TERN was found June 29 at Skimmer Island, Ocean City, MD.
EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES* continued to be found along Reidtown RD, Reid, Washington Co, MD, with a report from June 27.
The LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE at the end of Candlewood Dr, Charles Town, Jefferson Co, WV is still present with the most recent report from June 30.
Prompted by a report of possible nesting VEERY, possibly as many as a dozen singing VEERY were found at Glover-Archbold Park, NW DC on July 1.
Nesting SAVANNAH SPARROWS were found June 27 near Lucketts, Loudoun Co, VA. A HENSLOW'S SPARROW was found July 28 on Porter Cemetery Road, Allegany Co, MD. Several HENSLOW'S SPARROWS were found July 28 and 30 along Old Legislative Rd, Allegany Co, MD.
DICKCISSELS continue to be reported from a number of locations this past week. Both DICKCISSELS and BOBOLINKS were reported from Clarke Co, VA on June 27 near a pond on Borden Springs Rd.
Most of this week's reports have been gleaned from the MD & DC Birding group on Google, VA-Bird, West Virginia Birding List, and DE-Birds list servers.
