Subject: [MDBirding] 4th of July, Worcester County

Happy 4th to All!

Lisa and I spent the early part of the day, before the crowds and heat set in, birding a few Worcester County hotspots.

At Truitt's Landing, where we began around 630am, she got her life King Rail. We also had 3 Virginia Rails calling (one seen), some Glossy Ibis flyovers and I finally snagged my year Saltmarsh Sparrow (for 268 for the year).

An hour's walk on the OSV at Asstaeague was lovely, but produced little avian-wise, except for one big surprise: an immature Black Scoter, sitting right off the shore amid the fisherman and picnickers. The bird waddled into the water as we approached, and we wondered if it may have been sick or injured.

OC Inlet had too many people and not enough Wilson's Storm-Petrels (ie, zero). No uncommon terns at Skimmer Island, but oodles of Skimmers, Least, Royal and Common Terns, herons and egrets of every size and description, plus a half-dozen Willetts, American Oystercatchers, Brown Pelicans, etc.

Good Birding!
