Subject: Poplar Island Sightings from July 5, 2012
This report is submitted on behalf of Jan Reese of Talbot County, who continues to periodically survey the flora and fauna of the Paul Sarbanes Ecosystem Restoration Project at Poplar Island. The summary of bird observations that follows was taken by permission from the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers and MD Port Administration, July 2012, Fauna Monitoring Report for the Paul S. Sarbanes Ecosystem Restoration Project at Poplar Island.
This latest census is highlighted by continued accumulation of vagrant species, arrival of the first south transient shorebirds, and nest success of the many species utilizing the project site. A large contingent of vagrant Forster's Tern and many more Laughing Gull are in residence since the last census, the nearly 300 transient shorebirds include six species, and some nesting species are doing well while others are not. Osprey and Purple Martin are among the latter since the strong wind of June 29th destroyed all but the most sheltered Osprey nests. The carnage was high with possibly 70 of the active nests and/or contents being lost. One martin box and its contents was lost and one box survived.
On the brighter side were observations of Glossy Ibis, Virginia Rail, American Oystercatcher, Avocet and both Caspian and Black tern. - Jan Reese
