Subject: [MDBirding] Pt. Lookout, 7/7/12

Jane Kostenko and I popped down to Pt. Lookout State Park to look for the ibis that Patty Craig reported from Thursday morning. We ran into Mikey Lutmerding who was headed toward the pond. We walked up to the pond and pushed through the phragmites in a couple of spots to scan the pond. There were at least 2 Black-crowned Night-Herons and about a dozen Great Blue Herons in the main part of the pond. No ibis of any ilk, though. Lots of swallows took off from down near the lighthouse, at one point, due to an American Crow which was hellbent on eating one. Mostly Barn Swallows but it appeared that there might have been other species involved but they were too distant to ID. One Lesser Yellowlegs and one Least Sandpiper in the pond near the north end and a couple of Killdeer, too. A few Brown-headed Nuthatches were flying around coming and going from the trees north of the bathrooms and the picnic area.

Mikey reported a Dickcissel along Long Neck Road where he had started the day.

He stayed on to bird the area a bit more after we split. Smoking hot already by 9 and the air was quite soggy. Not a good day to be out!
