This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon
Naturalist Society. This report was completed Tuesday, July 17, at 10
AM.

Top birds this week are.BUFFLEHEAD* in MD, "GREAT WHITE" GREAT BLUE
HERON in MD, WESTERN KINGBIRD* in MD, AND RED CROSSBILL in VA.

Other birds of interest include.waterfowl, shorebirds, AFRICAN
COLLARED-DOVE, and SEDGE WREN.

Very unusual at this season was a BUFFLEHEAD seen July 16 at
Hart-Miller Island, Baltimore Co MD. The GREAT WHITE HERON, a color
morph of the GREAT BLUE HERON, continues at Fort Frederick SP,
Washington Co MD, seen most recently on July 15. A WESTERN KINGBIRD
was photographed July 11 at Bombay Hook NWR, Kent Co DE, near
Whitehall Neck & Bear Swamp Rds. Two RED CROSSBILLS were reported July
12 in Rockingham Co VA, near the WV state line 2 miles below Reddish
Knob.

Scattered thinly over the reporting area, waterfowl unlikely at this
season included a TUNDRA SWAN on July 13 in King George Co VA in ponds
near Rte 3, a RING-NECKED DUCK on July 10 and 13 at Swan Creek
Wetland, Anne Arundel Co MD, two LESSER SCAUP July 16 on Hart-Miller
Island, a SURF SCOTER July 10 & 12 at Ocean City Inlet, Worcester Co
MD and another July 16 on Martingdale Lane in Talbot Co MD. A COMMON
MERGANSER was spotted at Violette's Lock (C&O Canal), Montgomery Co
MD, on July 15, and a RED-BREASTED MERGANSER was at Assateague Island
NS, Worcester Co MD, on July 10. Three RUDDY DUCKS were reported July
13 in King George Co off LaGrange Lane, and a single RUDDY DUCK was
seen on Hart-Miller Island July 16.

At Castaways Campground, Worcester Co MD, a COMMON LOON was seen on
July 11, and on July 15 a HORNED GREBE was reported at Violette's
Lock. WHITE IBIS showed up at widely separated locations in MD, one on
July 13 in La Plata near Routes 224 & 225, and two near Pennyfield
Lock (C&O Canal) in Montgomery Co MD on July 15. An AMERICAN COOT was
seen July 13 in King George Co VA near Rte 3, and another was spotted
on Northampton Lake, Prince George's Co MD, on July 16.

Shorebirds included AMERICAN AVOCETS, four at Swan Creek Wetland on
July 11, and one at Huntley Meadows Pk, Fairfax Co VA, on July 14, and
two MARBLED GODWITS observed by several on Skimmer Island, Ocean City
MD, on July 10. Slightly early PECTORAL SANDPIPERS were seen, at
Plantation Ponds, Wicomico Co MD on July 10, at E.A. Vaughn WMA,
Worcester Co MD, on July 11, twelve at PCAC Obs. Platform #1, Talbot
Co MD, on July 15, and at Huntley Meadows Pk, also on July 15.

Almost certainly an escape, an AFRICAN COLLARED-DOVE was seen and
heard at least twice in Waldorf, Charles Co MD, most recently on July
14 on Bland Street off of Mill Hill Rd.

Finally, a singing SEDGE WREN was photographed July 13 near Sealston,
in King George Co VA.
