Hey Matt,

I keep my (strapless) binoculars in my hand at my side too...I don't want to waste time reaching for them. I always have my camera with the 300mm lens strapped around my neck and wouldn't want to take the chance of having the two straps get tangled up while a bird is slipping away, so embarrasment isn't an issue. Wish I had HBO-sounds like a cool documentary.

I didn't see any comments about this documentary, so I'll just throw it out there that Kim and I enjoyed it very much. The video footage of the birds is excellent throughout and the stories were fairly interesting as well.

The portrayal of birders was very diverse in the sense of age, experience, and seriousness. One of my favorite (and relatable) interviewees was a young girl who could not focus on the camera or interviewer, her eyes constantly scanning the surroundings for birds while she was talking. This is absolutely how I carry on conversations outdoors so we got a good laugh out of it. I thought it was interesting that author Jonathan Franzen, who talks openly about his birding, was still seemingly embarassed by it. He was carrying his strapless Swarovski binoculars in one hand, close to his side, which I've (perhaps wrongly?) associated with people who are not quite comfortable birding in public.

Anyway, it was a fun way to spend an hour and I recommend it. It's available on-demand and online to HBO subscribers. Not sure when the DVD will be available.

I let my subscription to HBO expire after The Big Year preview aired, so ... enjoy!

PS. This seems like old times ... Back in the days of The Osprey's Nest, Norm Saunder's original electronic Bulletin Board (remember bauds and modems, old timers?) I used to compile and post a monthly schedule of upcoming bird-related TV shows on the natural history cable channels. We used to record them (on Beta tapes!) and play them as background in our wild bird store. Ah, nostalgia just isn't what it used to be ...
