Subject: [MDBirding] Swan Harbor, 7/25, bobolinks

Birded Swan Harbor with Ruth Bergstrom this morning. Two highlights come to mind.

We found 3 bobolinks at the new impoundment on the right, the one covered with vegetation. Thanks to Dave Gigliotti for alerting me to the bobolinks.

And Ruth's dog Ginger found an enormous cicada killer holding a cicada; luggage in tow, it flew up from the ground and circled around with its heavy load for a minute or two before somehow finding its obscure tunnel (we watched) and taking its paralyzed cargo inside to meet a ghastly slow death. I had never before seen a cicada killer actually holding a stung cicada. Thanks to Ginger for the find.

Also a green heron, yellow warbler, yb cuckoo and 4 shorebird species. 2 marsh wrens at the marsh. Big birds in numbers--eagles, osprey, etc.--flying around behind the new impoundments. Large numbers of butterflies, including good numbers of zebra. Quite a few dark phase female tiger swallowtails. Great day to bird. Hope this stuff is around for the Ches. Audubon walk on Sunday. Ebird list below.
