Subject: Poplar Island Sightings from July 20, 2012
This report is submitted on behalf of Jan Reese of Talbot County, who continues to periodically survey the flora and fauna of the Paul Sarbanes Ecosystem Restoration Project at Poplar Island. The summary of bird observations that follows was taken by permission from the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers and MD Port Administration, July 2012, Fauna Monitoring Report for the Paul S. Sarbanes Ecosystem Restoration Project at Poplar Island.
Transient shorebirds increased three-fold the past two weeks, despite the very limited shallow-water habitat at the project site. The 10 species of transient shorebirds total about 1000 and are focused in Cell 5 at the south end of the island.
Highlight species and numbers are: 3 species of rails, 26 Spotted Sandpiper and 40 Stilt Sandpiper. Both of these species of sandpiper have been historically uncommon to very scarce among transients. Most interesting is a Carolina Wren among dike slope switchgrass near the north end of Cell 2 where I had one over a year ago. Poplar Island is an unusual habitat for this residential habitat species. - Jan Reese
