Subject: [MDBirding] Pink-footed Goose added to the Maryland List

Hi MDBirding:

We have just posted updates to the MD/DC Records Committee (MD/DCRC) web page.

MD/DCRC Changes:

The Pink-footed Goose, observed earlier this year in Howard County,
was accepted by the MD/DCRC and is added to the Official List of the
Birds of Maryland, inserted after Fulvous Whistling-Duck. This brings
the total number of species on the Maryland list to 444.

With this set of changes, identifiable subspecies or forms that are
unusual to our region are now designated in the lists within
parenthesis that follow the full common name. For example ...

Common Teal is now shown as Green-winged Teal (Eurasian)
Audubon's Warbler is now shown as Yellow-rumped Warbler (Audubon's)
Great White Heron is now shown as Great Blue Heron (Great White)
etc.

These changes were implemented primarily to eliminate the use of
quotation marks in the MD/DCRC database, which creates some technical
challenges.

AOU Changes:

All of the Maryland PDF listing documents on MD/DCRC web page were
updated to conform to the annual AOU Checklist Supplement, released
earlier this month. The geographic scope of the AOU Checklist
encompasses all of North and Middle America and the increasing
reliance on DNA analyses results in many species, genera, and
families being renamed, moved, and rearranged. Many changes were
implemented throughout the entire AOU checklist; however, below is a
summary of just the specific Maryland-related list changes to conform
with the 53rd Supplement:

1. The four Maryland falcons (American Kestrel, Merlin, Gyrfalcon,
and Peregrine Falcon) move from following Golden Eagle, to follow
Pileated Woodpecker.

2. The scientific name of Purple Gallinule changes from Porphyrio
martinica to P. martinicus to correct gender agreement.

3. The extinct Carolina Parakeet moves from following Common
Ground-Dove to follow the previously moved Peregrine Falcon.

4. The genus of Chuck-will's-widow and Eastern Whip-poor-will changes
from Caprimulgus to Antrostomus.

5. The Calliope Hummingbird moves from following Anna's Hummingbird
to follow Allen's Hummingbird and the genus of the Calliope
Hummingbird changes from Stellula to Selasphorus.

6. The Carolina Wren and Bewick's Wren move from following Rock Wren
to follow Marsh Wren.

7. The genus of Purple Finch and House Finch changes from Carpodacus
to Haemorhous.
