Subject: Poplar Island Sightings from July 31, 2012
This report is submitted on behalf of Jan Reese of Talbot County, who continues to periodically survey the flora and fauna of the Paul Sarbanes Ecosystem Restoration Project at Poplar Island. The summary of bird observations that follows was taken by permission from the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers and MD Port Administration, July 2012, Fauna Monitoring Report for the Paul S. Sarbanes Ecosystem Restoration Project at Poplar Island.
The number of transient shorebirds nearly doubled over the previous census despite continuing generally unfavorable weather conditions and only about half the shallow-water habitat of 12 days ago.
Species nesting at the site continue to cease activity and depart the site. Most notable decline in numbers this census are Double-crested Cormorant, egret species, Herring Gull and Red-winged blackbird.
I found most interesting the continuing presence of Stilt Sandpiper, fledgling Wilson's Phalarope and three Eastern Kingbird. Also, among the swallows is a partial albino with white wing remiges and ventral head and body, but brown wing coverts, rectrices and dorsal head and body. A striking bird among the nesting and transient Bank Swallow.
