I fully agree with Kurt's set of comments and also the augmentation given by Patricia. I have refrained from facebook use since its inception. If Maryland birding community discussions move to facebook, I will miss them, but I have absolutely no intention of becoming a facebook user.
Actually, I continue to have mixed feelings about the way googlegroups is working, as the successor to MDOSPREY. I believe that somehow people shared information with more depth, more subtleties and friendlier interactions during the days of MDOSPREY, making it much more fun to read. Also, my dial-up computer system leads to lots more time expended in getting onto googlegroups each day. And, while I'm fussing about things, I might add that my gmail account forgets my password more than it should - which is pretty inconvenient since gmail encouraged me to use a very complicated password - one that is much too complicated for me to have confidently committed to memory.
Overall, in my opinion, the step from MDOSPREY to googlegroups was mainly a step down for me. In my opinion, stepping over to facebook would be another step down. I do not plan to go there.
