Subject: [MDBirding] re DNR NEWS - BROWNSVILLE POND DRAINED

Just in case Brownsville pond should become a WASH CO shorebird hotspot i thought i would mention points of interest nearby as well as local amenities:

Points of interest:
1. Gathland State Park -a part of the S MTN Battlefield (the precursor battle - i hope i don't need to mention CIVIL WAR - to Antietam) is nearby
2. Appalachian Trail - can be accessed from Gathland State Park
3. Weverton Cliffs - a side (blue) trail of the Appalachian Trail gives a great view of the Potomac. There is parking at the southernmost intersection of Weverton Rd with MD 67 just before the intersection of MD 67 and US 340. I believe the RT hiking distance would be about 3 miles. You are guaranteed to see TVs, probably also BVs, but perhaps Osprey and even on a really good day a BE.
4. Harpers Ferry - would be appx 8 miles distant

Amenities:
Gas - either in Boonsboro or 12 miles south at the last left turn (Keep Tryst Rd) off of US 340 before it crosses the Potomac
Food:
1. Crawfords in Boonsboro just west of the intersection of ALT US 40 (aka themain st. in town) and MD 34. I can vouch for the omelet, although i never had lunch there.
2. Bakery/confectionery shop WAS just across the street from Crawfords in April of 2011. Go there after breakfast if it hasn't gone under due to the recession.
3. Himes Store would be a good bet for a sandwich and beverage (not sure if they have alcohol). Find them at the northernmost intersection of Weverton Rd with MD 67. Can't say if they do vegetarian fare.

I'll try to get over to the (former) pond on Sunday, or Monday.
