Subject: [MDBirding] MOURNING WARBLER, lots of migrants @ Wheaton Regional Park today

Hi all,

Well, I did say it would get better! Lots of action early, died off pretty much by 9:30 AM but in that period very exciting! We had 7 species of warbler and a few other migrants. Best bird by far was a first autumn MOURNING WARBLER seen for about 2 minutes (out of 20 standing and looking at the patch of weeds where it was lurking!) in the Shorefield area of the park -- rather similar to first-fall female MOWA illustration in Peterson "Warbler" guide but brighter uniform yellow underparts from upper breast through undertail coverts, brownish head and breast-band with pale yellow throat, thin white eyering broken in front and back of eye, undertail coverts rather long, & compared to nearby Common Yellowthroats, a hair longer and obviously bulkier. It called several times with a rather loud chip note whilst foraging in low scrub and yellow-flowering sunflower-like plants. We had several passages of active migrant flocks, one consisting almost entirely of Redstarts and Chestnut-sideds, another more exciting with two BLUE-WINGS and two adult CANADAS as well as the ever-present Redstarts and Chestnuts. The only Empid seen today was of the "Traill's" variety, probably Willow based on general structure & fairly dull coloring. Still large number of Pewees flitting about.
