Subject: [MDBirding] Oxbow Lake - Common Raven and Blue-winged Teal (8/21), possible Sandhill Crane (8/11)

I thought I'd pass along two recent reports from Jay Sheppard for Oxbow Lake. Today he heard a Common Raven (Ravens have been found previously at Oxbow Lake) and had 2 Blue-winged Teal.

On 8/11, a Russett birder-couple reported a possible Sandhill Crane: "Stuart and I were out at oxbow yesterday [8/11/2012] and saw what we are fairly sure was a sandhill crane. It was larger than the great blue herons (Stuart's comment on seeing it was "Is that an Ostrich?), crane shaped, tan and grey, had a lighter neck than its body, and had a dark spot on its head could not tell if it was red though."

Comments: Conditions: 80 deg, partly cloudy, winds calm. Jay Sheppard went
looking for Angela's possible Sandhill Crane, but found few herons or most other birds. He was not sure what time of the day or precisely where Angela & Stuart saw the bird, but he scanned nearly the whole lake on the trip. Here is Angela's message: "Stuart and I were out at oxbow yesterday [8/11/2012]and saw what we are fairly sure was a sandhill crane. It was larger than the great blue herons (Stuart's comment on seeing it was "Is that an Ostrich?), crane shaped, tan and grey, had a lighter neck than its body, and had a dark spot on its head could not tell if it was red though."
