Subject: [MDBirding] Laughing Gull - Caroline County!

Mega!!! Jerry Fletcher found one bird at Choptank!!!

Wait, you say... There are Laughing Gulls in Caroline County right now. It's barely worth mentioning here.

But wait, consider that it is August 22nd, 1952. Confused? Sixty years ago, a Laughing Gull in Caroline County would qualify as a FIRST COUNTY RECORD!

Folks, with help from Bob Ringler (he will kindly be offering up a notable sighting or two from the MD Birding database super mainframe computer), Matt Hafner (for his editorial comments an ideas) and Jared Fisher (for his technical savvy in helping with the link), here is a little story about a rather interesting historical gull sighting from the 1950's.

The link above is for the first edition, Week 1 installment of "This Week In MD Birding."

The idea was a little something I thought might generate discussion on the MD Birding Facebook Group site, while at the same time, it could impart bird-related wisdom to us all. Telling some stories of our state's rich birding history is something that I believe was past due.

More editions will be coming soon. Should you have an idea, a story, a historic sighting, etc... I'm happy to hear about it and possibly work it into a future edition.

With two kids, two jobs and a sincere
passion for birds, I've little time for anything else. That said, if you think you are game to author a future edition, please contact me offline.

I hope you all enjoy!

Good Birding,
