Top birds this week are HERALD PETREL* in MD, BLACK-CAPPED PETREL* in MD, WHITE-FACED STORM-PETREL* in MD, LEACH'S STORM-PETREL, BAND-RUMPED STORM-PETREL*, SWALLOW-TAILED KITE* in MD and VA, BRIDLED TERN in DE, ARCTIC TERN* in MD, and LONG-TAILED JAEGER* in DE.
Other birds of interest include GREAT SHEARWATER, WHITE IBIS, shorebirds, terns, gulls, PARASITIC JAEGER, COMMON NIGHTHAWK, flycatchers, PHILADELPHIA VIREO, COMMON RAVEN, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER, and MOURNING WARBLER.
A pelagic trip out of Lewes, DE on Aug 25 found a HERALD PETREL*, two BLACK-CAPPED PETRELS*, and a WHITE-FACED STORM-PETREL* in MD waters, a BRIDLED TERN in DE, 40 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES, 4 BLACK TERNS, an ARCTIC TERN* in MD, as well as a LONG-TAILED JAEGER in DE. Another ARCTIC TERN* was found Aug 25 at the Assateague Island National Seashore, Worcester Co, MD.
The four SWALLOW-TAILED KITES* seen last week near the Oxford Presbyterian Church on Blue Grass Trail Rd about 5 miles outside Lexington, Rockbridge Co, VA were seen again this week along with a single MISSISSIPPI KITE. A SWALLOW-TAILED KITE was seen overhead while driving on Rte 80 near Kemptown in Frederick Co, MD, on Aug 21.
A GREAT SHEARWATER was seen Aug 25 from the Assateague Island National Seashore, Worcester Co, MD.
The juvenile WHITE IBIS continues to be seen at Tanyard Marsh, Caroline Co, MD with the latest sighting on Aug 25.
AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS continued to be seen at several spots including the Hughes Rd polo grounds, Montgomery Co, MD on Aug 22 and 24; at the Oakwood turf farm at the corner of Taylor and Waller Rd, Wicomico Co, MD on Aug 23; at the Summit Hall Turf Farm, Aug 24; and on Aug 25 along LaGrange Ln in King George Co, VA and another along Leedstown Rd in Westmoreland Co, VA. Three American Golden Plovers were found in a flooded field Aug 26 at Hurlock, Dorchester Co, MD. Twenty-six PIPING PLOVERS were seen at Chincoteague NWR on Aug 24 during the weekly shorebird survey.
An UPLAND SANDPIPER was found on the turf farm on John Brown Rd on Aug 23. Two UPLAND SANDPIPERS were in the large field on the south side of Oland Rd, about 0.1 miles from Rte 85 in Frederick Co, MD Aug 25. Three UPLAND SANDPIPERS were found Aug 26 south of Oland Rd between Rte 85 and New Design Rd. An UPLAND SANDPIPER was found Aug 26 and 27 in a freshly mowed field a mile north of Cecilton on Rte 213, Cecil Co, MD.
More than 30 HUDSONIAN GODWITS were seen Aug 25 at Raymond Pool in Bombay Hook NWR, Kent Co, DE. The morning of Aug 25, 19 HUDSONIAN GODWITS flew over Fort Smallwood Park, Anne Arundel Co, MD; a little later in the morning 16 were seen passing Holland Point, also in Anne Arundel Co. And not much later 16 HUDSONIAN GODWITS were spotted flying over the King George Ponds along Rte 3 near Sealston VA in King George Co, VA. A possible HUDSONIAN GODWIT was seen with 8 MARBLED GODWITS on Skimmer Island, Ocean City, MD Aug 27. Eight MARBLED GODITS were seen Aug 22 and 24 at Skimmer Island, Ocean City, Worcester Co, MD. There were 15 MARBLED GODWITS at Chincoteague NWR on Aug 24.
The Swan Creek mitigation project in northern Anne Arundel Co, MD hosted a BAIRD'S SANDPIPER and a RED-NECKED PHALAROPE Aug 24 and 25. The facility is only open Monday through Friday and birders must check in at office. A BAIRD'S SANDPIPER was found Aug 25 in King William Co, VA at the turf farm along Woodbury Rd, off of Walkerton Rd. A BAIRD'S SANDPIPER was spotted Aug 26 along Log Cabin Rd, Salisbury, MD. BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS were seen Aug 25 and 26 along John Brown Rd off of Rte 301, Queen Anne's Co, MD. A WILSON'S PHALAROPE was seen Aug 26 in the nw cell of the Hurlock WWTP, Dorchester Co, MD.
More LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS, 262, were counted on Wild Beach than ever before in the 3-year history of conducting the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge Shorebird Surveys.
A BLACK TERN was seen Aug 21 at Perryville Community Park, Cecil Co, MD. Six different tern species, CASPIAN, BLACK, COMMON, FORSTER'S, ROYAL, and SANDWICH, were seen at Windmill Point, Lancaster Co, VA the evening of Aug 26.
A PARASITIC JAEGER was seen Aug 25 from the Assateague Island National Seashore, Worcester Co, MD.
COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were seen in a number of locations throughout the area with 180 flying over Cumberland, Allegany Co, MD Aug 22, more than 600 flying over an apartment on Viers Mill Rd, Montgomery Co, MD Aug 24, and 150 on Aug 27 in the Twinbrook section of Rockville, Montgomery Co, MD.
OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHERS showed up in a number of locations including a back yard in Woodbine, Carroll Co, MD on Aug 21; another on Aug 22 at the Wheaton Branch Stormwater Ponds on Dennis Ave, Silver Spring, Montgomery Co, MD. A hatch-year YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER was seen Aug 22 at Wheaton Regional Park, Montgomery Co, MD. Another was found Aug 24 at the main section of the James River Park, Richmond, VA. A YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER and two LEAST FLYCATCHERS were found in the same area at Leesylvania SP, Prince William Co, VA Aug 25. Three YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHERS were reported from Rock Creek Park NW DC on Aug 25.
A PHILADELPHIA VIREO was seen Aug 23 at Wheaton Regional Park.
A COMMON RAVEN was observed Aug 21 at Oxbow Lake, Anne Arundel Co, MD; another was observed Aug 23 at Harwood in Anne Arundel Co. Two were observed at the Swan Creek facility on Aug 24 and 25.
A RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH was found Aug 25 in the parking area of Elk Forest WMA, Cecil Co, MD.
Lots of warblers were reported last week though sightings did slow down over the weekend. Male GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLERS were seen Aug 24 at both Wheaton Regional Park and the Middle Patuxent Environmental Area, Howard Co, MD. A MOURNING WARBLER was found Aug 23 on the backside of Huntley Meadows Park, Fairfax Co, VA, accessible from the parking lot off of Telegraph Rd.
The Snickers Gap Hawkwatch needs volunteers. The season officially begins this weekend Saturday, September 1st and will continue until December 1st. Volunteer counters are needed for weekdays and weekend days. Both volunteers with experience and those willing to learn are welcome.
