Your description matches very closely with a very early YBFL I saw here in my yard back on August 11. Very definitely a teardrop shaped eye-ring (tapering towards the rear of the eye, wings dark (almost black, like a goldfinch). Very small size and upright posture, along with strong yellowish underparts alerted me to it.
