From my back porch last night, I heard a male Great Horned Owl "hooing." in the distance. It was about 1:00 a.m.
Typically, it's the Barred Owl that holds court here in and around my property. We have Barred owlets every summer and any time of year adults will often hang out near my back yard, to the consternation of my dog Pip. So I'm a bit surprised to hear Great Horneds somewhat "sharing" the territory. Is this common?
I'm also interested in why Aug. 31/September 1 should get these owls singing. Is it early courtship? A calling out to family groups? Or simply enjoying the Blue Moon (celestial body, not beer).
