Subject: Poplar Island Sightings from August 28, 2012
This report is submitted on behalf of Jan Reese of Talbot County, who continues to periodically survey the flora and fauna of the Paul Sarbanes Ecosystem Restoration Project at Poplar Island.
The summary of bird observations that follows was taken by permission from the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers and MD Port Administration, August 2012, Fauna Monitoring Report for the Paul S. Sarbanes Ecosystem Restoration Project at Poplar Island.
Today's census found little change from 14 August. Transient shorebirds total about half the previous census, while about 200 early arriving surface-feeding ducks now frequent the project site. Most notable among the transients are nearly 50 Blue-winged Teal and over 100 American Avocet, both the highest number recorded in 10 years of PIERP censusing. Similarly, vagrant gulls and terns decreased by about half, while 60 Black Tern is also the most ever tallied.
