This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon
Naturalist Society. This report was completed Tuesday, September 4, at
10 AM.

Top bird this week is SWALLOW-TAILED KITE* and RUFF* in VA.

Other birds of interest include WHITE IBIS, MISSISSIPPI KITE,
shorebirds including RUFF*, terns, gulls, COMMON NIGHTHAWK, CHIMNEY
SWIFT, flycatchers, PHILADELPHIA VIREO, COMMON RAVEN, RED-BREASTED
NUTHATCH, BROWN CREEPER, warblers including CONNECTICUT WARBLER,
VESPER SPARROW, RED CROSSBILL, and PINE SISKIN.

One of the four SWALLOW-TAILED KITES* seen near the Oxford
Presbyterian Church at the intersection of Blue Grass Trail, Rte 612,
and N. Buffalo Rd, Rte 611, about 5 miles outside Lexington,
Rockbridge Co, VA, was seen again on Sept 1. A SWALLOW-TAILED KITE*
was seen Aug 30 and Sept 3 soaring over a field in Gretna,
Pittsylvania Co, VA.

A RUFF* was found and photographed on the Wildlife Loop Aug 30 at
Chincoteague NWR, Accomack Co, VA. It was not relocated.

The juvenile WHITE IBIS continued to be seen at Tanyard Marsh,
Caroline Co, MD with a sighting on Aug 28. An immature WHITE IBIS was
seen Sept 3 at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, NE DC.

On Aug 30 a MISSISSIPPI KITE flew over the Harvey's Knob Hawkwatch
located on the Botetourt-Bedford Co line near Roanoke, VA.

An AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER and four BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS were seen Sept 3
at Staunton View Park, Mecklenburg, VA.

Thirty-nine PIPING PLOVERS were seen Aug 31 during the weekly
shorebird/gull survey at Chincoteague NWR, VA. Also seen during the
survey were 11 MARBLED GODWITS, 10 RED KNOTS, eight BUFF-BREASTED
SANDPIPERS, three WILSON'S PHALAROPES, 488 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS,
and one BLACK TERN.

On Aug 28 the trip to Poplar Island, Talbot Co, MD found 33
BLACK-NECKED STILTS, 110 AMERICAN AVOCETS, four WILSON'S PHALAROPES,
and 60 BLACK TERNS. A trip there on Aug 29 found eight AMERICAN GOLDEN
PLOVERS, eight BLACK-NECKED STILTS, 64 AMERICAN AVOCETS, four WILSON'S
PHALAROPES, four RED-NECKED PHALAROPES, and 30 BLACK TERNS.

An UPLAND SANDPIPER was seen Aug 30 in a restricted area of the
Edgewood Area of the Aberdeen Proving Ground, Harford Co, MD. An
UPLAND SANDPIPER was seen Sept 1 at Youghiogheny Reservoir, Garrett
Co, MD.

Three godwits flew over Davidsonville, Anne Arundel Co, MD Aug 29.
Eight MARBLED GODWITS and two HUDSONIAN GODWITS were seen Aug 31 on
Skimmer Island, Ocean City, MD.

The Swan Creek mitigation project in northern Anne Arundel Co, MD
hosted a BAIRD'S SANDPIPER in the south cell Aug 29. The facility is
only open Monday through Friday and birders must check in at office. A
BAIRD'S SANDPIPER was seen Sept 1 and Sept 2 at North Branch, Allegany
Co, MD. Two BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS were found Sept 2 in King William Co,
VA at the turf farm along Woodbury Rd, off of Walkerton Rd. Two
BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS were seen Sept 3 at the Chincoteague NWR. A
BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER was seen Aug 29 at Murray Sod Farm on
Blueberry Rd, Worcester Co, MD.

A WILSON'S PHALAROPE was seen at the Chincoteague NWR Aug 30.

Three BLACK TERNS were flying down the Potomac at Point Lookout SP, St
Mary's Co, MD on Sept 2. A BLACK TERN was seen Sept. 3 flying over
Powell's Creek at Leesylvania State Park. Four BLACK TERNS were seen
Sept 3 at Black Walnut Point, Talbot Co, MD.

COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were seen in a number of locations throughout the
area with more than 450 crossing over the Rockfish Gap Hawkwatch,
Waynesboro, Augusta Co, VA late in the day Aug 28. While driving
between Churchville and Fishersville, Augusta Co, VA more than 2500
COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were seen.

At least 5,000 CHIMNEY SWIFTS were observed Aug 31 dropping into a
chimney at the corner of 16th St and East-West Hwy, Silver Spring,
Montgomery Co, MD.

Flycatchers highlighted a lot of this past week's reports. OLIVE-SIDED
FLYCATCHERS showed up in a number of locations including along the
Rail Trail just east of Bumpy Oak Rd, Charles Co, MD on Aug 30; at
Black Walnut Point, Talbot Co, MD, Aug 30; and on a tall snag at the
Trayfoot overlook, Shenandoah NP, VA on Aug 31. One flew over the
Kiptopeke St Pk Hawk Watch, Northampton Co, VA Sept 3. YELLOW-BELLIED
FLYCATCHERS were reported from several locations this past week
including one Aug 28 at Susquehanna SP, Harford Co, MD. Several were
seen Aug 29: two at Brookside Gardens, Montgomery Co, MD; one at Rock
Creek Park, NW DC; one at Fair Hill Nature Center, Cecil Co, MD; and
another in Northwest Branch in Silver Spring, Montgomery Co, MD. One
was also seen Aug 30 at the Howard Co (MD) Conservancy. Two
YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHERS were found Aug 31 at the Blue Ridge Center
for Environmental Stewardship in western Loudoun Co, VA. One was found
at The Point, Prince William Co, VA Sept 1. One was seen and heard at
Point Lookout SP, St Mary's Co, MD. LEAST FLYCATCHERS were found in a
number of locations throughout the Greater Washington area.

A PHILADELPHIA VIREO was seen Aug 30 at the Fair Hill Nature Center.
One was seen Sept 1 in a yard in Woodstock, Howard Co, MD and another
at Bles Park, Loudoun Co, VA Sept 2.

Two COMMON RAVENS flew over Riverbend Park, Fairfax Co, VA Sept 1.

RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES popped up at a number of locations in the area
this past week.

A BROWN CREEPER was found Aug 31 at the Blue Ridge Center for
Environmental Stewardship, Loudoun Co, VA.

Warblers continued to show up in decent numbers this past week. A
BREWSTER'S WARBLER was seen Aug 29 at Governor Bridge, Prince George's
Co, MD. A female GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER and a male MOURNING WARBLER
were found Aug 30 at the parking lot at Thoroughfare Overlook,
Shenandoah NP, VA. A CONNECTICUT WARBLER was reported on the backside
of Huntley Meadows Park, Fairfax Co, VA, Sept 2 in the far end of the
last meadow to the left before the observation platform. A MOURNING
WARBLER was found Aug 29 at Wheaton Regional Pk, Montgomery Co, MD. A
MOURNING WARBLER was also seen Sept 2 at Point Lookout SP, St Mary's
Co, MD.

A VESPER SPARROW was reported Aug 28 at Burke Lake, Fairfax Co, VA.

A probable RED CROSSBILL was heard and seen flying over the Chesapeake
Bay at Holland Point, Anne Arundel Co, MD Sept 2.

A PINE SISKIN appeared at a feeder in Conowingo, Cecil Co, MD Aug 29.

The Snickers Gap Hawkwatch needs volunteers. The season officially
begins this weekend Saturday, September 1st and will continue until
December 1st. Volunteer counters are needed for weekdays and weekend
days. Both volunteers with experience and those willing to learn are
