Subject: [MDBirding] Cross-post: adult Sabine's Gull was seen in VA on Sep 6

MD Birding:

FYI ... below is a cross-post from VA-Birds.

Let's see, this was about 120 miles SW of Triadelphia Reservoir and
the VA bird was last seen about 48 hours earlier. That's an average
velocity of about 2.5 miles per hour ... unless it was carrying coconuts ...

(Apologies to Monty Python fans).

Subject: [Va-bird] Possible Sabine's Gull near Mt. Crawford, VA
(Shenandoah Valley ) Sept. 6, 2012

An adult Sabine's Gull was seen at the North River Wastewater
Treatment Plant Thursday, Sept. 6, 2012 from 1-3pm. It apparently
left the facility later that afternoon and was not found again on
September 7. It was seen by 11 individuals, all of whom did not have
binoculars but did get relatively close looks (50'). Photographs were
obtained that, while of poor quality because of the lack of a
telephoto lens, did capture the distinctive black and white wing
markings when observed from above, flying, as well as showing the
bird resting on water of the secondary settling lagoon. I am happy to
send/make photos available to anyone interested, and will be
submitting this information with details to VARCOM.

As the bird appeared healthy and flying, and was solitary, birders
should be on the lookout for this smallish, beautiful, gull-like tern
in the Shenandoah Valley. I apologize for the late post, but have
been unavailable to send before now.

Bill Portlock. Additional observers include Allan Thomson, Brooke
Newton, Erin Ebersteine, Ben Eberline, Jimmy Sollner, Yancy Powell,
Gwen Pearson, Eric Wiegandt, Ken Slazyk, and Anita Riggleman.
