This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon
Naturalist Society. This report was completed Tuesday, September 11,
at 7 AM.

Top birds this week are SWALLOW-TAILED KITE* in VA and SABINE'S GULL*
in MD and VA.

Other birds of interest include AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, white form of
GREAT BLUE HERON, WHITE IBIS, SANDHILL CRANE, shorebirds, flycatchers,
PHILADELPHIA VIREO, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, SEDGE WREN, warblers
including CONNECTICUT, MOURNING, and GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLERS, and
LINCOLN'S SPARROW.

Two SWALLOW-TAILED KITES* seen near the Oxford Presbyterian Church at
the intersection of Blue Grass Trail, Rte 612, and N. Buffalo Rd, Rte
611, about 5 miles outside Lexington, Rockbridge Co, VA, were seen
again on Sep 7 and 8. A SWALLOW-TAILED KITE* was seen Sep 5 and 8
soaring over a field in Gretna, Pittsylvania Co, VA.

An adult SABINE'S GULL* was found at the North River Wastewater
Treatment Plant near Mt Crawford, VA on Sep 6. An adult SABINE'S
GULL*, perhaps the same bird, was seen Sep 8, 9, and 10 in Nichols
Cove, Triadelphia Reservoir-Greenbridge, Howard Co, MD.

Three AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS continued at Prime Hook Beach Rd,
Sussex Co, DE; latest report is Sep 6. The white form of GREAT BLUE
HERON was seen again on Sep 9 at Fort Frederick SP, Washington Co, MD.

The juvenile WHITE IBIS was seen again on Sept 9 at Kenilworth Aquatic
Gardens, Washington, DC. A SANDHILL CRANE was found near Lexington,
Rockbridge Co, VA on Sep 5.

A WESTERN SANDPIPER joined a flock of LEAST SANDPIPERS in the puddles
on the parking lot for RFK Stadium in Washington, DC on Sep 4.

The Swan Creek mitigation project in northern Anne Arundel Co, MD
hosted a BAIRD'S SANDPIPER in the south cell Sep 4. The facility is
only open Monday through Friday and birders must check in at office. A
BAIRD'S SANDPIPER was seen Sept 9 near the Sabine's Gull at
Triadelphia Reservoir. As shorebird migration continues, sightings of
grasspipers are increasing. Several areas had BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER
this week including 10 at Murray Sod Farm on Blueberry Rd, Worcester
Co, MD on Sep 6; 5 at Walkerton Sod Farm, King and Queen Co, VA on Sep
6; up to 3 birds on Central Sod Farm on Swamp Circle Rd, Anne Arundel
Co, MD Sep 7 through 10; 1 on Woodward Turf Farm, Culpeper, VA on Sep
7; and 1 on the harvested potato fields on Rt 9 near the entrance road
to Bombay Hook NWR, Kent Co, DE on Sep 8. The weekly shorebird survey
at Chincoteague NWR, Accomack Co, VA had 22 species of shorebirds
including 49 PIPING PLOVERS, 12 MARBLED GODWITS, and 9 BUFF-BREASTED
SANDPIPERS.

OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHERS were seen at Irvine Nature Center, Owings
Mills, Howard Co, MD on Sep 9; at Love's Point-Pier Avenue, Queen
Anne's Co, MD on Sep 7; and Mt Nebo WMA, Garrett Co, MD on Sep 9.
YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER was found in several locations including
Huntley Meadows Park, Fairfax Co, VA on Sep 5; Greenfield Rd,
Frederick Co, MD on Sep 6; Violette's Lock, C&O Canal NP, Montgomery
Co, MD on Sep 8; Sycamore Landing Road at the C&O Canal, Montgomery
Co, MD on Sep 9; Hashawha Environmental Center, Carroll Co, MD on Sep
9, the maintenance yard at Rock Creek Park, Washington, DC on Sep 10;
and Black Walnut Point, Talbot Co, MD on Sep 10. A WESTERN KINGBIRD
was spotted in Algonkian Park, Loudoun Co, VA on Sep 8. Another
WESTERN KINGBIRD was seen near the intersection of Layton Landing Rd
and Resolutions Rd in Leedstown, Westmoreland Co, VA on Sep 8.

PHILADELPHIA VIREOS were seen in several places including Cromwell
Valley Park, Baltimore Co, MD on Sep 5; Mt Pleasant-Howard
Conservancy, Howard Co, MD on Sep 6; Adkins Arboretum, Caroline Co, MD
on Sep 7; Violette's Lock on the C&O Canal on Sep 8; the Blue Mash
Trail, Montgomery Co, MD on Sep 9; Aspen Hill Rec Area, Montgomery Co,
MD on Sep 10; and Governor's Bridge Natural Area, Prince Georges Co,
MD on Sep 10.

The early arrival of RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES continued across the area
this week.

A SEDGE WREN was found in Waples Mill Park, Fairfax Co, VA on Sep 10.
A SEDGE WREN was spotted in Wheaton Regional Park, Montgomery Co, MD
on Sep 10.

Warblers moved through the area in good numbers. A GOLDEN-WINGED
WARBLER was found in Cromwell Valley Park on Sep 9. CONNECTICUT
WARBLER locations included Turkey Point in Elk Neck SP, Cecil Co, MD
on Sep 6; various spots in Cromwell Valley Park on Sep 6 through 10;
the Middle Patuxent Environmental area, Howard Co, MD on Sep 8; on the
restricted access old US Navy Dairy Farm near Gambrills, MD on Sep 8;
and the Adkins Arboretum on Sep 9. Areas with MOURNING WARBLER
included the Howard Conservancy, Howard Co, MD on Sep 6; the Wilson's
Mill Trail in Little Bennett Regional Park, Montgomery Co, MD on Sep
9; Black Hill Reg Park near the boat ramp on Sep 9; and in Adkins
Arboretum on Sep 10.

A LINCOLN'S SPARROW was seen in West Friendship Park, Howard Co, MD on
Sep 10.

The Snickers Gap Hawkwatch needs volunteers. The season will continue
until December 1st. Volunteer counters are needed for weekdays and
weekend days. Both volunteers with experience and those willing to
