Kim called me yesterday evening to say there were 2 Ring-necked Pheasants on the shoulder of Rt. 23 by the bridge over Phillips Mill Rd. I drove on up there and found 3, 2 males a female, feeding in the drainage ditch on the south side of the highway, just east of the bridge. Based on the location, I would label this birds of questionable origin, at best. The north side shoulder has knee high grass, but otherwise, this is a wooded area. Not sure how long they can survive on the side of a busy 55 mph highway, especially since Kim reported them on the north side and I found them on the south side.
I've not seen a Ring-necked Pheasant in Harford County since 1999-2000, when there was one bird that was heard, and occasionally seen, at the Forest Lakes wetlands on Osbourne Parkway in Forest Hill. Kim reported seeing a road-killed male earlier this summer on Rt. 23 between Jarrettsville and Madonna.
I was able to take a quick picture with my phone as I slowly passed by them along the shoulder.
