Subject: Re: [MDBirding] The Broad-wingeds Are coming - help HMANA thru sponsorship

Hi List

Not sure this is generally known, but the Hawk Migration Assn of North America [HMANA] is a principal supporter of hawk migration data gathering in N America. Last year they appealed to the birding public to make up for a shortfall in funding due to the loss (i believe) of a well heeled sponsor. Their need for funding continues. Of the 6 or so MD hawkcount sites supported by HMANA, only the Wash Monument site(supported by the Wash Co Bird Club) had a sponsorthis past year - to my knowledge.Sponsorship would be a good project for other MOS chapters who "host" a hawkcount site in their neighborhoods. A letter from Julie Brown of the HMANA follows:

Jim (Michael) Speicher
Dear Washington County Bird Club,

Thank you for showing your support for HawkCount .org with an Accipiter group sponsorship of the Washington Monument State Park site pages this past year.

We were thrilled to see such a positive response from the hawkwatching community to our appeal to support HawkCount Now and Forever. Thanks to your help and others like you, weve raised over $5,500 so far to continue to maintain and improve this important web site and data archive.
This is also a friendly reminder that your sponsorship will run out on December 31, 2012. We invite you to continue to invest in the future of HawkCount by renewing your sponsorship for another year.
Special discount for Fund-Raising Month. migrating Broad-winged hawks will pass through the mid-Atlantic states. Broad-wings often migrate in very large
numbers and large groups. At the right time with the right weather it is
possible to see lots of them almost anywhere.September 18th or 19th are often the big days in this area.
