Seen at 5:45 on Lakeside Drive, Robert E. Lee Park (Lake Roland), just past the "stump dump" for Davey Tree: A large hummingbird with bright white breast and belly, dark upperparts, long dark very thin bill (a hummingbird bill). About the size of a small warbler-there were ruby-throated hummers around, and it was much larger. Closest match in the Sibley book is Violet-Crowned, but I didn't see any red on the bill. Also, Sibley shows a plain brown tail on the Violet-Crowned, and this bird had a black and white tail pattern, with white on the edges, like many of our North American hummers.
So what was it? I don't have experience with tropical hummers, but will check my Costa Rica field guide as soon as I get offline.
The bird was between Lakeside Drive and the Jones Falls. It appeared as I was watching a mixed flock of warblers, vireos and other birds. I got a good but fairly brief look.
