Subject: Poplar Island Sightings from September 10, 2012

This report is submitted on behalf of Jan Reese of Talbot County, who
continues to periodically survey the flora and fauna of the Paul Sarbanes
Ecosystem Restoration Project at Poplar Island.

The summary of bird observations that follows was taken by permission
from the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers and MD Port Administration, September
2012, Fauna Monitoring Report for the Paul S. Sarbanes Ecosystem Restoration
Project at Poplar Island.

A system with high-pressure, air flow from the northwest, and cool
temperatures began arriving Friday evening (Sep 7). This provided the
favorable conditions transient birds have been seeking for weeks. Many
individuals and species seen at the project site recently have now departed
while others from further north have come in to take their place. Note the
appearance of plentiful or increased numbers of Northern Shoveler,
Green-winged Teal, Great Egret, Yellowlegs, Laughing Gull and Brown-headed
Cowbird. Most notable species include nearly 1000 Northern Shoveler, 250
Green-winged Teal, Pied-billed Grebe, American Golden Plover, Greater
Yellowlegs, Western Willet, Whimbrel, Stilt Sandpiper, Wilson's Phalarope
and over 500 Laughing Gull.
