Subject: [MDBirding] winter finch prediction and some MD pelagic species

Hi all,

We are just back from a cruise which visited New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. We went birding at Halifax with Blake Maybank and he said their conifer cone crop (spruce, balsam fir) is very poor this year. They have seen no crossbills yet and we could not even find any r-b nuthatches. On the other hand, we had quite a few r-b nuthatches at Irving Nature Park near St. John (NB) but again, no "winter finches" could be located. Large numbers of NE-breeding warblers and vireos at this great migrant trap, but since this is a MD listserv, they shall remain nameless!

Best birds at sea in Maryland waters: one adult Sabine's Gull, a number of Band-rumped Storm-petrels, Audubon's and Cory's Shearwaters but no real tubenose rarities. Despite the storms all around, we had exceptionally calm seas (dead calm!) alas...all the passengers were thankful except us!

Folks

Let me go out on a limb this is a birding listserve . This could be a very good winter finch season since the drought was quite extensive covering much of North America. <snip>
