Yesterday, my brother Mike and I covered areas along the Patuxent River, from Governor Bridge south to Mt. Calvert, and then Cedar Haven, which is at the far southern edge of the county. We had a good showing of migrant warblers at Governor Bridge, with 40 individuals, spread out as such:
Tennessee Warbler - 5 Common Yellowthroat - 6 American Redstart - 6 Northern Parula - 9 Magnolia Warbler - 8 Chestnut-sided Warbler - 5 Black-throated Green Warbler - 1
Good numbers but only only seven species. The high numbers of Tennessees and Parulas were most striking to us. It was also great to see an Olive-sided Flycatcher, which had been found the previous day - not sure who found it, if it was Peter, Warren, and Lisa, or the PG Audubon group, but thanks! Our full list is here: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S11592082
We then headed to Swanson Road Natural Area, which is south of Governor Bridge, where our only Black-throated Blue Warbler of the day was found. We then got great views of a Northern Waterthrush and Philadelphia Vireo at Schoolhouse Pond, as well as the female Blue-winged Teal that Fred Shaffer reported throughout the summer. Depot Ponds held four Northern Shovelers, our first of the fall.
Like I mentioned, our last stop of the day was at Cedar Haven Fishing Area. Laughing Gulls were the dominant bird, but also present were: three Forster's Terns, a Summer Tanager, and a Royal Tern. That list can be seen here: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S11595727
