A little over a month ago, I corresponded with Jim Stasz and Matt Hafner about a Maryland (and DC?) eBird portal. �Twelve states currently employ the use of a dedicated state eBird page. �These include Alaska, California, Louisiana, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, and Wisconsin. �Below is a link to the Wisconsin eBird page, which I think is quite nice:

I think most would agree that something like this would be a great addition to Maryland birding. �Matt spoke with Marshall Iliff (project leader at eBird) to see what steps were needed to start one of these portals. �He found out that there is a fairly substantial development cost for the portals. �There is a yearly maintenance cost as well, which is also not inexpensive. �Sponsors are generally needed to support these costs. �Such sponsors that other states have used include the National Science Foundation, national and local Audubon chapters, state ornithological societies, local bird observatories, local nature centers, state departments of fisheries and wildlife, as well as other charitable foundations and (possibly?) individual sponsors.
Due to Maryland's intense eBird effort, month after month, I feel this would be a good investment of time and capital. �I plan to do some fundraising this fall, but if anyone has any ideas, I would love to hear them. �Hopefully this is something that will get off the ground in the near future.
