Hi All,
The Ellison/Martin party for the Kent County Fall Count covered southwestern Kent County concentrating on our home vicinity of Chesapeake Landing and Great Oak Pond (76 species) and Eastern Neck Island (84 species) compiling a grand total of 113 species. Highlights included 19 warbler species (18 on E. Neck I. alone) with good numbers of some uncommon Eastern Shore migrants, e.g. 10 TENNESSEE WARBLERS, 6 CAPE MAY WARBLERS, 6 BLACKBURNIAN WARBLERS, and a late adult male BLUE-WINGED WARBLER on E. Neck I. at the west end of Bogles Wharf Rd; good waterfowl numbers on Great Oak Pd including 35 Blue-winged Teal and 38 shovelers; a big BROAD-WINGED HAWK flight totaling about 800 birds, the largest kettles were over Great Oak Pd around 10:00 AM; all three nuthatches including 8 RED-BREASTED and 10 Brown-headed (all on E. Neck I.); 8 Rose-breasted Grosbeaks; a Purple Finch (brown type) at Chesapeake Landing; 3 SNOWY EGRETS at Eastern Neck Narrows; 17 Great Egrets with 14 on the pond near Shipyard Creek Landing; 8 BLACK TERNS on the Chester River seen from Bogles Wharf; and a BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO seen on the Duck Inn Trail at E. Neck I. So it was a good, even excellent day, absent any mega rare birds.
Good Birding,
Walter Ellison & Nancy Martin
