At 10:00 this morning, we spotted a kettle of at least 100 broad-winged hawks soaring above the gardens in a clear blue sky. A bit later, we had a second group of a dozen or so. This is (one reason) why we bird!
Complete list for the gardens, Wheaton Regional Park, and the Nature Center this morning:
Canada Goose Wood Duck Mallard Great Blue Heron Green Heron Turkey Vulture Red-shouldered Hawk Broad-winged Hawk Solitary Sandpiper Mourning Dove Yellow-billed Cuckoo (heard, by the Nature Center) Ruby-throated Hummingbird (juv. male) Belted Kingfisher Red-bellied Woodpecker Downy Woodpecker Northern Flicker Pileated Woodpecker Eastern Phoebe Blue Jay American Crow Carolina Chickadee Carolina Wren Ruby-crowned Kinglet (flocking by the Nature Center) Veery Hermit Thrush Wood Thrush American Robin Gray Catbird Brown Thrasher Black-and-white Warbler Magnolia Warbler Chestnut-sided Warbler Black-throated Blue Warbler Black-throated Green Warbler Eastern Towhee Chipping Sparrow Song Sparrow Northern Cardinal Rose-breasted Grosbeak (female) American Goldfinch
A note on the Carolina wren: We joined Gail and co. for a while mid-morning, and I mistakenly told her that we had just seen a house wren. Gail moved on, and then it came more into view and started singing.
The three thrushes (hermit, wood, and Veery) were all in the same shrubbery near the white house, around noon. We also had Veery and hermit in the gardens, near the conservatory.
