I arrived at Irvine Nature Center at 5:40 pm and found two Common Nighthawks (CONI) circling above the field in front of the nature center. For ten minutes I watch them and tried to get pics and a video; but failed to capture any quality shots. Just before I turned away, I checked the sky and found another twenty-five CONIs flying south!
On my way through the forest behind the nature center I was thrilled to hear a Hermit Thrush and see a Gray-cheeked Thrush. I also managed to find four sparrow species: 12 Chipping Sparrow, 1 Savannah Sparrow, 4 Song Sparrow and 1 Lincoln's Sparrow.
Other birds of interest included: a male Northern Harrier, a female Merlin and a Sharp-shinned Hawk.
