PARTICIPANT INFORMATION SHEET

Project Title: Comparing Social Identity and Serious Leisure Levels of Birders and Birding Participants

Investigator:�Michael J. Bradley, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Recreation and Park
Administration, College of Health Sciences, Eastern Kentucky University.

Purpose:�The purpose of this study is to gain insight as to the levels of serious
leisure and social identity of birders and people participating in
birding in the United States.

Procedures:�Participating in this study will consist of answering questions about serious
leisure, social identity and standard demographic data. Depending on
your answers, there is no specified time for completion of this online
survey; however the anticipated time will not exceed fifteen minutes.

Risks of Participation:�There are no known risks associated with this project that are greater than those encountered in daily life.

Benefits:�Results from this research may be beneficial to the understanding of the
perceptions of social identity and serious leisure of birders and
birding participants in the United States.

Confidentiality:�Your responses to the survey are confidential. No names or other identifying information will be attached to your survey. The data will be securely
stored in a locked file cabinet in the researchers� offices. �Only the
researcher will have access to the information that is stored on an external electronic device without any identifying information and it will be destroyed five years from completion of the
study. The EKU IRB has the authority to inspect consent records and data files to assure compliance with approved procedures.
