Maryland birders -
The first group of geese that winter on Leeds Creek arrived this morning at the headwaters of the creek, where we live. The group, probably a family group, included nine birds. They came gently swimming downstream past our place around 9 a.m., and proceeded to explore the shoreline of the cove on our right. After checking that area to make sure things were still OK, they moved across the creek at an angle that would bring them to the lawn of our neighbors beside the Tunis Mills Bridge. Usually they go right up onto the lawn of that family, so I will watch for that during my next trip across the bridge.
From early November to early March these creek headwaters have served as a staging area for between 600 and 6000 geese each night. By gentleman's agreement amongst the neighbors, no one hunts them when there are resting at this site.
We delight in seeing their return.
