Subject: Poplar Island Sightings from September 24, 2012
This report is submitted on behalf of Jan Reese of Talbot County, who continues to periodically survey the flora and fauna of the Paul Sarbanes Ecosystem Restoration Project at Poplar Island.
The summary of bird observations that follows was taken by permission from the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers and MD Port Administration, September 2012, Fauna Monitoring Report for the Paul S. Sarbanes Ecosystem Restoration Project at Poplar Island.
This census found most shorebirds, nesting species, and gulls have departed the site, while surface-feeding waterfowl and many songbird species have increased. Noteworthy is the near absence of Great Black-backed Gull (usually congregating in the 1000'sthis time of year). Conversely, there is an abundance of Laughing Gull and Bald Eagle. Some early transient flocks of Canada Goose were seen flying high down the Bay, while Monarch and other butterfly species were especially abundant.
