This morning I had an appointment at Solley Elementary, so I thought I'd quickly stop by and visit with Tim's Nelson's Sparrow. I found an additional Nelson's while I was there, as well as got some serenading from two SORA's at the wetlands. The Baird's that Stan mentioned was still present in the North Cell, on that spit of land that normally would hold Caspian Terns.
However, far and away the BEST bird by far was a single RED CROSSBILL which flew over the trailer / check in area at approx 10:20AM this morning.
Here are my observations / comments on that bird: While scoping the North Cell, the bird flew directly overhead. Jip notes were exact match to the Sibley Apps first call note (NY). Type 3 would be my call on the subspecies. At one point, the bird let out one very brief ascending squeak / skrillllll. I fumbled for my phone to get video/audio, but I was unable to get it recording before the bird flew South and out of ear shot. I took a photo of the ground and by the time I had my iPhone switched to capture video/audio, the bird was out of ear shot. I believe this was only a single bird. Observation time was maybe 10-15 seconds.
Good Birding,
