Subject: [MDBirding] Sora's at Elk River Park and possible Red Crossbill on Saturday

Hi all. I had at least 12 Sora's yesterday afternoon while Kayaking around Elkton Marsh. Several of them were right across from the boat ramp at the park and were calling when I got out of my truck.

I am like 99% sure I had a Red Crossbill yesterday in my neighbors yard across the street. It was very early in the morning, like 7:30 and I hear a strange song that I didn't recognize. That alone is very unusual. It sounded finch like with a background in winter wren. It sounded like it was making the song up as it went along singing, but would sort of repeat itself. I first thought someones Canary must have got out because that is what it sounded like, and the jip, jip, jip note made me stop and think. I eliminated everything that I know of. I could not find the bird until it flew. It was a finch sized bird but I could make out no markings as it flew away from me and it quickly went behind the tree line.

I went in and listened to my birdjam red crossbill and it sounded very similar to that but had a different arrangement of notes but the notes sounded almost the same. Does that make sense?

I know White winged Crossbill song and note. I have had a lot of time with them and learned it. I have only heard Red Crossbill a few times in my life and its been a long time.
