Subject: [MDBirding] Swan Creek, 10/3/12 - Baird's and Nelson's

Hi all - had a very productive morning at Swan Creek from 725 to 830 am, before braving the traffic into DC.

Found the juvenile Baird's Sandpiper (year bird 297) almost immediately, feeding around a shallow pool in the north cell, along with a couple of Killdeer, a Semipalmated Plover and a peep. It was mid-size between the peep and Killdeer, with long tail extension, scaly-looking back with white edging to some feathers and a somewhat prominent supercilium.

It took me almost until the end of my walk to locate the Nelson's Sparrow, but it gave excellent looks on the left side of the path in the wetlands (as you approach the riffle), a little more than half way to the riffle. (LIFER and year bird 298!)

Also noted were many of the same birds Tim Carney reported yesterday, including Swamp Sparrow, Marsh Wren, Yellowthroats, and vocalizing Sora and Virginia Rail.

Three Little Blue Herons are still hanging around, and a Palm Warbler was a nice bonus.

Good Birding!
