After the excellent run of Connecticut Warblers our area has experienced this fall, this hardly seems like news, but around 9:45 this morning, I found a Connecticut Warbler at the Wheaton Branch Stormwater Ponds on Dennis Ave in Silver Spring. The bird was in the weedy area south of the southernmost pond (Cell #3) and looked to be a 1st winter. It was not very cooperative, but I was able to get some record photos before it flew off towards the western perimeter of the site. I searched for it for 30 min or so, but was unable to relocate it. As this site has not received much coverage, I resolved in late July to really try and "get into the weeds" at this location to see what I could find. Covering only 14 acres, surrounded on all sides by development, polluted with runoff from the Wheaton Business District and choked with invasive alien vines, I wasn't overly optimistic, but the results have surprised me - I've recorded some 90-odd species here since July.
