Subject: [MDBirding] IMPORTANT if off topic - Fungal meningitis linked to steroid injections for back pain

This has beenprominently in the news in recent days - cases are reported all over the south/northeast and spreading beyond. It's unlikely, but not impossible that someone who may need to know doesn't in fact know and since it's likely that there are more "oldsters" than "youngsters" in this group, i'm taking the liberty of posting information to the Group. A link as well as the symptoms are below.

>Symptoms of fungal meningitis are similar to symptoms of other forms of meningitis, however they often appear more gradually and can be very mild at first. In addition to typical meningitis symptoms, like headache, fever, nausea, and stiffness of the neck, people with fungal meningitis may also experience confusion, dizziness, and discomfort from bright lights. Patients might just have one or two of these symptoms.
>The method of administration of the steroid is rather specific [epidural steroid injections, i.e. medication injected into the spine], but if in doubt, it can't hurt to talk to your doctor...
>
>NOTE: This form of meningitis is not contagious.
