Top birds this week are BLACK-TAILED GODWIT and SAY'S PHOEBE* in VA, NORTHERN WHEATEAR* in MD and YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD in MD and VA.
Birds of interest this week include MISSISSIPPI KITE, NORTHERN GOSHAWK, PEREGRINE FALCON, SANDHILL CRANE, shorebirds, LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, FIRST OF SEASON WINTER WREN, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW and DARK-EYED JUNCO, hummingbirds, warblers, sparrows, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, PINE SISKIN, EASTERN MEADOWLARK and RED CROSSBILL.
A BLACK-TAILED GODWIT was at Chincoteague NWR, Accomack Co, VA on October 5 and 6.
A SAY'S PHOEBE* was at Pleasure House Point, Virginia Beach, VA on October 7.
A NORTHERN WHEATEAR* buzzed the tower at BWI Airport, Anne Arundel Co, MD on October 8.
Two YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS were in a flock of BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS and EUROPEAN STARLINGS in Cape Charles, Northampton Co, VA on October 3. A YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was on Hart-Miller Island, Baltimore Co, MD on October 8.
Two juvenile MISSISSIPPI KITES were at Fort McHenry, Baltimore, MD on October 3.
An immature NORTHERN GOSHAWK was feeding on a squirrel at the corner of Foremost Ct. and Aden Rd., Nokesville, Prince William Co, MD on October 8.
Three to four PEREGRINE FALCONS were seen at Assateague Island, Worcester Co, MD on October 6.
A SANDHILL CRANE paid a brief visit to the Swan Creek dredge containment facility, Anne Arundel Co, MD on October 4. Another SANDHILL CRANE was sighted in a thermal over Music Fair Marsh, Owings Mills, Baltimore Co, MD on October 6. A SANDHILL CRANE flew over Bayside Point, Assateague Island, Worcester Co, MD on October 8.
A HUDSONIAN GODWIT and a WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER were at the private Wades Point Inn, Talbot Co, MD on October 7. A BAIRD'S SANDPIPER was at the Swan Creek dredge containment facility, Anne Arundel Co, MD on October 5. A trip to Hart-Miller Island, Baltimore Co, MD on October 8 located 10 species of shorebird including two LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS.
A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was at Sandy Point SP, Anne Arundel Co, MD on October 2.
The many First of Season sightings this week included WINTER WREN, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, DARK-EYED JUNCO and RUSTY BLACKBIRD.
RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS were visiting feeders throughout the region. A RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD visited a yard in Carroll Co, MD, seen on October 6 and 7.
A SEDGE WREN was at Blandy Field, Richmond, VA on October 5.
While a bit slower than the previous week, many species of warblers continued to be seen throughout the reporting area this past week. ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS were noted in several areas including: Walrond Park, Roanoke Co, VA on October 3 and 4; Irvine Nature Center, Owings Mills, Baltimore Co, MD on October 5; Blue Mash Nature Trail, Montgomery Co, MD on October 7 and Turkey Point, Cecil Co, MD on October 7. The influx of CONNECTICUT WARBLERS continued with several sightings including: Wheaton Branch Stormwater Ponds, Montgomery Co, MD on October 5; a yard in Howard Co, MD on October 6; Governor Bridge Natural Area, Prince Georges Co, MD and Reedy Creek (James River Park), Richmond, VA on October 7. A MOURNING WARBLER was at Governor Bridge Natural Area, Prince Georges Co, MD on October 7.
The reports of returning Sparrows increased during the week. A LARK SPARROW was at Fort Miles near the observation tower at Cape Henlopen SP, Sussex Co, DE. A BAIRD'S and a NELSON'S SPARROW were at Swan Creek dredge containment facility, Anne Arundel Co, MD on October 3. The NELSON'S SPARROW was seen again on October 4 and 5. Another NELSON'S SPARROW was at Ragged Island WMA, Isle of Wright Co, VA on October 4 and 8. NELSON'S, SALTMARSH and SEASIDE SPARROWS wee at Fowlers Beach in Prime Hook NWR, Sussex Co., DE. LINCOLN'S SPARROWS were seen throughout the region during the week.
A late SUMMER TANAGER was in a yard in Lincoln, Sussex Co, DE on October 8.
ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS, PINE SISKINS and PURPLE FINCHES continued to be seen throughout the region this past week.
An EASTERN MEADOWLARK, a first for the site, was at the Dog Run of Rock Creek Park, DC on October 5.
A RED CROSSBILL was at Cape Henlopen SP, Sussex Co, DE.
Most of this week's reports have been gleaned from the VA-Bird, West Virginia Birding List, and DE-Birds list servers, and the mdbirding web site.
